Guan Hoe Soon Restaurant

Had lunch at this little known Peranakan restaurant in Joo Chiat where the shop name sounds anything but Peranakan. However, the dishes were authentic with just the right amount of spices, esp the Ayam Buah Keluak & Assam Pomfret. Definitely worth a 2nd trip.

Winter Solstice

Today is Dong Zhi (literally ‘arrival of winter’) and families gather to give thanks for a good year, and celebrate it by eating tang yuan. These rice flour balls have stuffings such as sesame seed or red bean paste, and are served in a clear soup typically made of sugar and water, and seasoned with pandan leaves and ginger.

The word ‘tang’ (meaning ‘soup’) sounds like ‘tuan’ (meaning ‘reunion’); ‘yuan’ means ‘round’, and in the phrase ‘yuan man,’ means ‘complete’. Tang yuan thus signifies unity and prosperity for the family.

Managed to eat some tang yuan during din at Crystal Jade before catching the movie 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'.

Finger Lickin' Turkey

Pre-x'mas dinner at my cousin's place. The turkey was delicious cos it was moist and not tough. The home-made apple sauce for the ham was yummy and the Ritz Carlton log-cake was rich & delicious too... Feels great to catch up with family and celebrate this cheery season together...

Kim Choo's Kitchen

6/11 (sat)
- Inspired by Little Nonya's fine display of Peranakan culinary skills, we decided to try out the Peranakan cuisine at Katong. We had lunch at Kim Choo's kitchen and ordered 'ayam buah keluak', beef rendang, sambal udang & sambal kang kong. The place was quite authentic and the food tasted rich in spices.
- after lunch, went to Kel's place for MJ.
- at night, Kel brought us to the 'Fish & Co Express' at E! Hub, downtown east.. the food tasted like the parent store.. but was much cheaper.

Birthday @ Chijmes

15/11 (sat)
Winston invited us to watch a dance at the Singapore Art Museum entitled the 'The Next Frame'. Its a series of vignettes combining film and dance to explore the theme of attachment and release. The dance was ok except for some technical glitches towards the end.

Anyway, it feels great to be back at my alma mater (yup, l was from SJI)

Next, the guys celebrated my birthday for me at Chijmes, 'Pizzeria Giardino'. The wood-fired pizza was delicious! l like the alfresco dining concept and nice ambience. Just realised Winston, SJ & me all had the same Bakerzin mango cake this year.. yumzz! But too bad sev still in India so cant join us...

20/11 (my actual birthday)
- sis bought me a t-shirt and treated me to a buffet at the newly opened 'Kuishin Bo' Jap Restaurant at Great World. Such a coincidence, we had din last year at the exact place when it used to be 'Kuriya' .. haha

Sumptuous Spread !

My blog's 2nd Birthday on 03-09-08! Went for din at 'Faber Rock' atop Mt Faber's Jewel Box . The ambience was great with a breathtaking view and a live band performance.

After din, we visited the new 'Henderson Waves' which is an unique architecture forming part of the 'Southern Ridges'. It was definitely an eye-opening experience !
